Auburn finishes on top of Legends Poll; Oregon No. 2

Sunday, December 5th, 2010

Amidst all the controversy surrounding him, Cam Newton put on a show for the ages in the SEC championship game on Saturday and clinched a spot for top-ranked Auburn in the BCS title game.

Auburn received all but one first-place votes in the Legends Poll Saturday and remained on top for the fourth straight week.

“I’ve said all year that if Auburn can make it through the season undefeated, they deserve to be No. 1,” said Pat Dye of Auburn, which he ranked No. 1 for the first time this season. “I’ve been pretty close to this team, and they’re special.”

Auburn will face No. 2 Oregon in the championship game. The Ducks clinched a spot this weekend as well with a 37-20 victory over Oregon State in the Civil War.

No. 3 TCU finds itself out of the running for a national championship for a second straight season after finishing a perfect 12-0.

No. 9 Oklahoma and No. 10 Virginia Tech clinched BCS bowl berths this weekend as well. Oklahoma won the Big 12 championship over No. 15 Nebraska and Virginia Tech took the ACC crown with a win over No. 21 Florida State.

Connecticut stayed at No. 23 after defeating Cincinnati and clinching the Big East title and an automatic BCS bid.
