Auburn completes perfect season, finishes at No. 1 in Legends Poll; TCU is No. 2

Wednesday, January 12th, 2011

Auburn completed its magical run on Monday night, ending a 53-year championship drought with victory over Oregon in the BCS championship game.

The Tigers (14-0) finished at No. 1 in the Legends Poll. Despite a less than stellar offensive performance after a long layoff, Auburn was able to outlast Oregon, 22-19, on a last-second field goal by Wes Byrum.

Both Auburn and Oregon faced layoffs of longer than a month between their final regular season games and the BCS title. On Monday’s conference call, the Legends voiced their displeasure with the system.

“I was at the game last night,” said former BYU coach LaVell Edwards. “I didn’t think either team was that sharp, and I think that 30 or more days between games is just too long to recapture the timing that it takes on offense.”

Regardless, Auburn was able to make more plays as a defensive unit.

“I was surprised that the offenses were stymied as much as they were,” said former USC coach John Robinson. “But in a game of speed versus physical, it looks like physical won out.”

No. 2 TCU (13-0) knocked off Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl to finish off a perfect season and is left wondering what might have happened if college football had a playoff.

Oregon fell a spot to No. 3 in the Legends Poll rankings.

No. 4 Stanford moved up a spot in the poll following its dominant performance in the Orange Bowl over Virginia Tech.

No. 5 Ohio State rounded out the top 5 after escaping in the Sugar Bowl against Arkansas.
