Coaching legend Bobby Bowden has been added to the committee in charge of selecting the Broyles Award recipient, an award that honors the nation’s top assistant coach in college football.
The award is named for our own Frank Broyles, former head coach and athletics director at the University of Arkansas. We’re proud to see a few fellow Scripps Legends Poll voters’ paths cross for this prestigious award.
The announcement came on the heels of another big revelation from Bowden. Earlier this week, Bowden announced that he underwent surgery for prostate cancer in 2007.
Below is a list of past Broyles Award winners from the Houston Chronicle:
Past winners of the award also include current Auburn coach Gene Chizik in 2004, as well as former Mississippi coach David Cutcliffe in 1998, former Maryland coach Ralph Friedgen in 1999 and former Kansas coach Mark Mangino in 2000. Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn won the award last season after helping the Tigers to the national championship.
