Two times was the charm for the Iowa Hawkeyes in their win over Northern Iowa 17-16. With a challenging day on offense for Iowa, the importance of special teams became very clear. Northern Iowa drove to set up a winning kick of 40 yards as time was running out. In a bizarre play, the attempt was blocked by the Hawkeyes. But the the ball did not pass the line of scrimmage. Northern Iowa recovered the ball and still had downs and time for one more try. Northern Iowa’s second try was blocked again by Iowa’s Jeremiha Hunter. One game winning block is hard enough but two in a row is truly “special” teams play.
For the outstanding special teams play, Iowa’s “kick block team” is awarded the “Legends Nike Game Ball” for the Special Teams Play of the Week.
