The TCU Horned Frogs opened the 2009 campaign with continued great defensive play, dominating the Virginia Cavaliers in Charlottesville 30-14. How dominating? Virginia didn’t have a play from scrimmage inside the red zone and could only get 177 yards of offense with seven first downs. Almost half of Virginia’s yards came late in the game after TCU’s lead was 30-0. The domination began up front with a great game plan to control the line of scrimmage and contain the Cavs’ new spread offense. Horned Frogs All-American defensive end Jerry Hughes had a career high eleven tackles.
For his team’s great play, Coach Dick Bumpas is awarded the “Legends Nike Game Ball” for the National Defensive Coordinator of the Week.
