It’s no shock that Alabama and LSU remained on top of the Scripps Legends Poll for the third consecutive week. All eyes will be on their showdown in Tuscaloosa Nov. 5.
USC coaching legend John Robinson bucked the trend, picking LSU No. 1 ahead of the Tide. On Monday’s teleconference, Robinson gave an interesting answer for why he put the Tigers on top.
Robinson: Well, I’ve got a simple reason. My wife-to-be went to LSU so you damn sure know I’m going to put them first. So, that pretty much solves that.
All kidding aside, they’ve had a tough schedule and a challenging schedule. They both are great teams. You know, they’re going to decide it, but I just feel like they deserve it because they’ve had the tougher schedule and they’ve played really well in that schedule. So, I just put them – I don’t by any means take anything away from Alabama. I love both teams. They’re the kind of teams I like and they’re very impressive.
Moderator: R.C., you had Oklahoma No. 1 and you’re the only guy that had Oklahoma this week out of our 19 votes. What gives?
Slocum: Well, I don’t know what that says. I have great respect for the SEC and for Alabama and LSU. I’ve watched both of them play. I really like them, but I think it’s easy to be attracted to that. Oklahoma may not be quite as physical in their defensive front as Alabama or LSU, but overall they’re very athletic defensive team. They go after the ball. They make big plays. They intercept balls. They create turnovers. And then I like their offense. I think they’re a pretty balanced offense. Their quarterback can be very good. I think if you look at the Alabama quarterback, the LSU quarterback and Oklahoma’s, in my opinion, I think the Oklahoma quarterback is the better of those three players. And I think they’re talented at the receiver plus they have a physical nature to their offense. So, I just hope to heck that we get to prove it. I hope we get down to either Oklahoma State or Oklahoma if they keep playing like they’re going – that those two will settle it between them. And that Alabama and LSU if they keep going that they’ll settle it between them. But this morning one thought came to my mind, you watch a certain level of college football where there’s teams – you say this team’s better – this team’s better – I look at the NFL and, you know, they’re all the same way. On any given day those teams, any one of those teams could beat the other. So, I hope we get a deal at the end of the year where we can line up and one of these teams from the Big 12 against one of the SEC and just see how it plays out.
